Family Cottage Blends Fun and Function
“In the summer, we relish the opportunity to be out on the water together,” Jess Wiedemer says with a smile. As the president and an owner of Hinkley, along with his brother Eric, a lifelong devotion to their business is balanced with the importance of family time, two core values that are an intrinsic part of their DNA.
As the fourth-generation owners of the Cleveland, Ohio-based lighting and ceiling fan company that is located just a few miles from the shores of Lake Erie, a love of design also comes naturally. So when they had the chance to renovate a summer cottage on the water, it was the perfect time to blend together personal and professional passions.
“Our dad cherished spending time with family, and he loved boating, so he instilled that same joy in us as we were growing up,” says Jess, who along with his wife Gina, three children and pup Bodhi, spend time in the renovated family retreat tucked in the quaint 1920’s lakeside community of Vermilion. The property, which perfectly blends modern and traditional style, is right on the water with their boat anchored just steps from the cottage door. It was recently updated to accommodate Jess and Eric’s energetic young families.
Inside the house, crisp white walls and dark floors extend throughout each room, punctuated with pops of texture, groovy accessories and modern nautical elements. Working with the local design firm Sapphire Pear and integrating Jess and Eric’s own favorite Hinkley lighting styles, the cottage is the perfect mix of modern and coastal to create a carefree summer haven.
